Ms. Alice starts each lesson with a grounding warm-up. This looks different in voice or piano class, but regardless, tuning into our bodies helps students feel confident and calm. We'll spend time in each class honing techniques and playing/singing songs.
Lessons are usually 1:1, though parents are always welcome to attend, observe, and occasionally participate. Ms. Alice recommends home practice for at least 5-days per week for all students, with varying amounts of time depending on age and instrument.
Ms. Alice cares deeply about students' self-expression and feeling of safety in her classroom, including affirming gender expansive identities. She researches teaching methods for neurodivergent students, as well, so that the space she provides is responsive to students' varying needs; Ms. Alice is not a trained therapist or doctor and any advice given should be seen from the lens of a caring music teacher. If a student is displaying need for additional assistance during class, she may ask their guardian to attend class for support.
PIANO: Every student brings a lesson book that best fits their skill level. We incorporate ear-training games at all ages so that students develop skills for figuring out any song by ear. Progress will depend on the amount of time the student spends practicing. Students of all ages are rewarded with stickers and "milestones" that helps gamify the learning experience. She's developed supplemental activities that help level-up techniques faster than the books, while making those technical activities fun.
Youth Piano (Ages 4-10 years): Depending on the age and reading level, we will either start in the Pre-Reading Piano Adventure book or the Primer Level Piano Adventure Book. Lessons will be 30 minute weekly classes where we will come home with the goal of practicing about 10-15 minutes for 5 days per week in between classes. Students will be taught warm up activities beyond what is contained in the lesson books and play a selected song from the anthology each week. Most students learn about 1-3 short songs each week if they're practicing at home regularly. It is recommended parents attend lessons with students age 4-5yo, so that their home practice time is more effective.
Pre-Teen and Teen Piano (Ages 11-17): When working with beginners, Ms. Alice encourages students to start in the Accelerated Piano Adventure series books. She is also happy to offer lessons to students who have taken lessons elsewhere and are looking either for a more relaxed relationship with their musical studies, or are looking to rejuvenate their skill set. She'll be happy to coach students on songs of their own choice.
Adult Piano: Ms. Alice offers classes to all ages and skill levels and will regularly check in with students about their aspirations for students' skill development. When teaching beginner adult students, Ms. Alice recommends using the Alfred's All-In-One Adult book. When working with more intermediate to advanced adult students, she can act as an anchor, guiding practice and reminding the student musician to remain grounded in their body and breath.
VOICE: Ms. Alice's bases her approach to vocal students on her musical theater background, with technical activities that boost the connection between head and chest voice, develop safe belting techniques, and expand students' singing range and confidence. She regularly reviews and demystifies the anatomy of the voice by pairing technical knowledge with helpful visualizations that help access each student's unique voice. Classes are always catered to the goals and wishes of each individual student.
Youth Voice (Ages 4-10 years): Ms. Alice encourages students at this age to pair singing with piano classes, and simply sing as much as possible. At this age, the most important thing is to keep singing and having fun without judgement. Just sing what feels good to you!
Pre-Teen and Teen Voice (Ages 11-17): School musicals and extracurricular musical activity coaching is one of Ms. Alice's strengths. A changing voice can be frustrating at times, but Ms. Alice will work with you through those changes so that you feel confident heading into any audition or rehearsal.
Adult Voice (18+): Whether you're auditioning and preparing for professional vocal performances, singing in a local band or at open mics, or just want to sing for fun, Ms. Alice is here to help you access your confident and healthy voice.
SONGWRITING: If a student is interested in learning about how to write songs, Ms. Alice will happily incorporate songwriting basics and activities into voice and piano classes.

“We’ve had a few teachers over the last few years and weren’t sure we were going to stick with it. Ms. Alice is the reason we’ve decided to continue. Our boys have very different personalities and she handles them both with patience and grace. They are motivated to practice and are excited to go to their lessons."

"I've had keyboard lessons before and felt like I couldn't keep up, or like the lessons didn't stick, but Alice created a personalized experience that suited my goals and learning style. Alice's knowledge and passion for music shines through in their lessons and it was a pleasure getting to work with them. I highly recommend to anyone taking music lessons with Alice!"
-Demi (adult)
“Rory really enjoys his lessons with Miss Alice, and we often find him at home plucking away on the piano without prompting now—in fact he played every day of winter break without us reminding him.”
-Colleen (parent)
"Ms. Alice has been a wonderful piano teacher for our two kids (ages 6 and 9). They’ve been working with her for over a year and have made remarkable progress, both technically and creatively. Most importantly, they genuinely love their lessons. Ms. Alice keeps them motivated and focused not just during class, but throughout the week, and she has a great ability to balance skill-building with creativity. We’re so grateful to have her as their teacher." -Jamie (parent)
"Before I started taking lessons with Alice, I had always been insecure about my voice and hadn't sang in years. Immediately, Alice made me feel comfortable, confident, and supported in every way to not just start singing every day and working on my voice, but performing my own songs in front of people. My family and friends are constantly telling me how much my voice has improved over the years of working with Alice, but even more so I feel and sound more like myself every day because of her kindness and encouragement." -Mary Allain (adult)
